Shanghai’s urbanity erupts unpredictably along its rural-urban periphery. The first projects in new districts are frequently isolated, surrounded only by farmland and informal development.
community
To counter this isolation BAU proposed a diverse array of programs, including living, working, recreation and shopping.
human scale
To achieve a finer urban grain BAU introduced two small roads across the site and a lineal park through the centre.
The resulting six distinct urban districts have varying programs and are each connected to each other and to the surrounding district via this public open space. On the east of the site there is a lower density, human-scale retail and services area. Density and height increases towards the west where housing is the dominant program.
Active edges along all perimeter streets provide the district with the potential for a commercial network to extend in various directions.
