podium and bill(ding)board
a humane institution
This small town community hospital will service dozens of local villages. The building is small but announces important progress in health-care in the district. BAU sought to provide a small-scale humane environment for all users, but also to celebrate the arrival of this new institution in the town.
podium and bill(ding)board
A horizontal perforated podium extends across most of the site. A bill(ding)board sits on top of this podium addressing the main road and presenting maximum significance to the town. The inpatient department and various service programs are situated in the bill(ding)board. All other functions are located in the podium.
traditional typology
Learning from a local tradition of courtyard buildings, the perforations in the podium form courtyards that connect the various functions. These courtyards provide sunny, airy, and relaxing green open spaces for patients, visitors, and staff.
healing gardens
The wards are located in the bill(ding)board provide to maximize natural light and ventilation and longer views for inpatients. Each ward has a garden outlook with external planting boxes on projecting shelves. The podium’s roof is a rooftop garden accessible from the inpatient department.
